Yashiro Tenshuu killed 5 people, including his girlfriend, and is now on death row. However, a secret government organization is willing to take him off death row if he allows himself to become a test subject to an experiment that requires a killer’s intent.
Candy’s Rating: 5/10
Candy’s Thoughts: Well this was an accidental find with good reviews so I said why the f not. Not to say I regretted it, but I definitely could’ve done without it.
So this story is basically what the synopsis says. A man on death row is giving a second chance at life. This chance however comes with being confined away with another death row inmate. Well that seems all fine and dandy for a while, the real reason they’re there is revealed. This reason is actually the biggest problem in the story for me. It’s extremely dumb. it’s like it wasn’t actually thought out, but the mangaka needed some type of force to drive the story. Like honestly, the more they tried to explain it, the dumber it got.
Okay so basically there’s something called “the black”, I know, so innovative already. This force basically is growing in this girls body and is consuming her, turning her less human. She can like wreck people, it’s really typical shit. So the point of the inmates is to have the black transfer to one of them. thing is, it’ll only transfer to someone with a stronger will then the current host. Okay, gravy, I’m over it so I’m just seeing how it plays out. The way it did though was so dumb. It’s just a bunch of typical, expected twists. The reason he’s on death row, the transferring of the force, and of course the super opness that is growing even more rapidly. It was just so….ridiculous.
I’m sure they had some deep underlying message in this one and were conveying it super artistically, or not, I have no clue. Honestly it looks like they took a bunch of horror aspects and said “this is good right?” Psst, it’s not.
The characters are underdeveloped to say the least. But hey it’s a short read and we really only need to know about one of them, but even giving it that, they’re super basic. Like they all act exactly how you’d expect them to act given just their appearance. I guess that’s how you can get away with telling us literally nothing about most of them. The two little facts we were told about the main girl were actually pointless bs too. The effort level just seems really low at this point. One fact is trying to explain how she got the black, and the other is that she’s someone’s sister. That’s it, that’s all folks. Seeing my point here?
I’m giving this manga a lot of shit, but it’s not as bad as I’m making it out to be. The art, being is strongest point, is absolutely stunning. It captures the emotions and ambience extremely well for me. That’s literally the majority of my score. The art is mature and matches the overall tone. The story is actually alright to read too. It’s not horribly done, it’s just nothing amazing or special that has never been seen before.
It at least stays true to its horror genre and doesn’t turn into some loli bullshit (I have a rant coming up about a manga that does this so sorry). The ending was….an ending, but it was pretty! Man just the whole execution of this manga is subpar, it really is, buuuuuuut IT’S PRETTY!
Honestly, you’re not missing out by skipping this one, but it’s short so if you’re craving a little horror seinen, go for it. If you’re not, welp, move along, nothing to see here.
