In a rainy spring day, first year high schooler Midori Saezima saw a tall, handsome fellow student took care of a stray kitten. Without knowing the boy’s name, she fell in love with him at the first sight. Due to sickness, Midori returned to school three days after summer vacation — only to find out that she was “volunteered” as a candidate for student council. After a series of embarrassing accidents, both she and the mysterious boy she had a crush on, Akira Sudo, were elected as members of the student council. Being the first student council of this newly established high school, they are about to create “new traditions” for their school and a bittersweet love story for themselves…

Candy’s Notes: YAY my weekly choice was good! Okay, so this is one of Ai Yazawa’s pieces. If you don’t know her, then you live under a rock and I clearly need to help you get your life right. She’s created amazing pieces like Parakiss and Nana, and really great ones like Gokinjo Monogatari and this. (There are others but I can’t spell them right now and I’m lazy). I really enjoyed this manga, which is weird because it’s full of things I normally hate in most shoujos. Like the main girl cried, like a lot, like all the time, like over everything, idk how she wasn’t dehydrated from all that cying. Akira, the main boy, was a douche (not really overall but he was in a very important aspect. If you read it, you’ll understand). Normally those two things right there would make me give up and turn away, but no, this manga was far too cute and was done so fabulously, things like that didn’t bother me nearly as much. Why? Because even though she was crying, she took action, Midori did not sit around and wait for things to happen, like ever. When a certain situation needed to be handled, she handled it. She was mature as F about it too. Akira…oh he upset the crap outta me with some of the stuff he pulled, but honestly, he’s a high school boy, don’t have high expectations of them LOL. The other characters were also really entertaining. The first and second student counsels served their purposes well without annoying or pissing me off, and I liked watching other romances develop besides the main couple. Ai always does that and I always enjoy it which is one of the reasons I really like reading her works. Her art is also one of my favorites. I adore her fashion sense and OMG I LIVE FOR THOSE LONG SKINNY BODIES! The plot was pretty much living your typical school life, from freshmen till graduation, nothing new there. The spin they put on it is that it’s a newly established school so they are the first graduating class and first student council. Because of that we get some really fun festival and events that make the manga feel more fresh. The comedy is totally on point and the drama isn’t too drawn out and I think it’s handled rather maturely. There was one part, omg one part that makes me upset but it’s because I hate when it’s done every single time. Idc how good a manga is, when this one thing is done, I want to punch someone. It’s cool though because the ending was conclusive and very satisfying. Not to mention that fluffy hair tho! All in all it’s a really good read, a classic and something great for beginners or veterans.

Avelys Notes: I’ve had this manga on my plan to read for ages, especially having seen it referenced so many times in shoujo manga. It looks older than it is (maybe because the guy’s hair LOL). I thought it was one of the classics which was written in the 80’s and I had no idea it was written by Ai Yazawa. The art felt so familiar to me and this story didn’t have all the edge I was used to seeing from Paradise Kiss and watching Nana. It was a good old fashioned shoujo with all the cute moments. The story has a lot of heart, the dynamic between the two leads being heart warming and realistic. The male lead says some things that make me laugh so hard some times, I can picture him as a real guy. The female lead is relatable despite being emotional. What I most like about her is the fact that despite being quick to cry, she isn’t whiny. Which is a real treat. She doesn’t overwhelm you with her drama, but tries to find solutions and eventually find happiness. The highlight of the manga for me is the character dialogues. From friends joking around in class to sweet words from a beloved–I could picture all of it happening in real life. There is some focus on the side characters, which gives the main story a chance to develop behind the scenes. The art of this manga was wonderful, as this mangaka knows how to give her characters individuality: different hairstyles and outfits. There wasn’t much variety since the characters were mostly in school, but when the story focused on areas outfit of school, you were exposed to very pretty outfits. Nothing outstanding like in Paradise Kiss (those outfits were amazing) but it’s still nice to see some variety. I highly recommend this manga if you’re looking for a really good love story, want to laugh and love this mangaka <3
